Växjö Municipality is situated in Kronoberg County in southern Sweden. Växjö has a long tradition of committing to environmental improvement, already from the 1970’s. In 1996 the decision on becoming fossil fuel free was taken, in 2006 the first environmental program was adopted, and in 2019, a new Sustainability Program was adopted.

POLICY AND STRATEGY

The goal set by Växjö in 1996 to become "fossil fuel free" has led to a reduction of 70% carbon dioxide emissions per inhabitant by 2020, compared to 1993. In particular Växjö has worked with notable success in the energy production, where all the energy produced in Växjö is now renewable. The emissions are reducing also in the transport sector, but more slowly. Växjö has implemented strict new sustainability criteria in their procurement activities, aiming to inspire others in Sweden to do likewise.

eProcurement:

Using an e-purchasing system and a joint distribution centre, the number of goods deliveries to municipal facilities in Växjö have decreased by as much as 80%. An optimised delivery plan with predetermined routes inform the facilities in advance when to expect deliveries, which helps them to plan their work and resources, and also saves a great deal of time. The whole process is managed via the internet.

The benefits of the coordinated goods transport scheme include:

over a 70% decrease in CO₂ emissions, equivalent to 40-50 kg less CO₂ per tonne of delivered goods;
greater efficiency and time savings
lower costs and therefore more efficient use of taxpayers' money;
the option of choosing between more suppliers and local (organic) suppliers;
benefits for small companies and suppliers of local products that can deliver to just one centre;
an increased possibility of fuelling trucks with green fuels such as biodiesel or biogas;
less heavy traffic around schools and retirement homes.
