The City of Turku (Turun kaupunki) lies on the south-west coast of Finland. Turku’s population is just under 180,000, making it the fifth largest city in Finland. Sustainable development budgeting with binding measures are applied to the whole city organisation, and sustainability criteria are now applied in 70% of procurement tenders.

POLICY AND STRATEGY

Sustainable development budgeting with binding measures are applied to the whole city organisation, and sustainability criteria are now applied in 70% of procurement tenders.

Supplier Engagement:

Turku has engaged business in a number of ways, including piloting the World Business Council’s Urban Infrastructure Initiative 2010-2011; entering into a Strategic Partnership with Siemens (2012-2014); developing the company’s approach and contributions towards small and medium-sized cities enhancing joint knowledge-creation and planning processes; and mobilising a “local coalition” for sustainable transport solutions.

Sectors

Construction: The timber-framed housing estate, in the Linnanfältti area in Turku, is a national lead project for the promotion of timber building and construction. It aims to meet the city’s housing needs while providing builders an opportunity to develop innovative timber construction strategies.
Vehicles: The City Council decided in autumn 2013 to prioritize electric equipment in public transport as well as in other procurements. In addition to a tram line, the implementation of electric buses is being prepared, and in the near future all the cars owned by the city will be electric cars.
